MEET THE ARTIST - STEFAN GEISSBÜHLER
Stefan Geissbühler always had a knack for art, growing up in the stunning Swiss town of Interlaken. The gorgeous scenery around him planted a seed early on, leading him to believe - “Nature's unbeatable at whipping up beauty, but with my art, I try to add a tiny sprinkle of beauty to the mix.”
Stefan first dabbled in adding beauty to the world through culinary arts, letting his creative juices flow with food. When fate stepped in with a shattered ankle in the ‘90s, life took a turn. With his leg in a cast, he moved from Switzerland to Colorado. No longer able to endure the chef's long-standing hours, his wife nudged him towards his true calling, art. Taking that push to heart, Stefan spent four healing years discovering his artistic voice and playing with various media. A decade after, his art career exploded when a gallery back in Switzerland displayed nearly 70 of his creations in a stellar exhibit, launching him into the limelight.
Stefan describes his style as ‘New Century Modern’, mixing mid-century vibes with an abstract expressionist twist. The bright colors and distinct touch make his creations visually sing. Drawing inspiration from travel, nature, architecture, and music, Stefan breathes life into even the most static scenes. Preferring hardboard as his ‘canvas’, it gives him the perfect foundation for using spackle knives and brayers (those rubber rollers from old-school printing) for layering acrylic into lively shapes and lines, infusing his work with playfully human traits.
He often frames his vibrant masterpieces in handmade cradled oak panels stained deep ebony, making them pop. Stefan's art is a global sensation, finding homes with national and international collectors, including big names like Kaiser Permanente and the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, to name a few. He's also crafted pieces for notable figures and companies from Leonard Slatkin of the Detroit Symphony to the CEO of Centene Corporation. In 2020, the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis roped him in for graphic design work for their concerts and big events – a fun detour from his main art biz that stretches his creative skills. Stefan's paintings have dazzled audiences in both solo and group exhibits all over Switzerland - Interlaken, Zürich, Zug, Chur, and Bern, marking some of his career’s high points.
Currently, his artwork is showcased by Mirada Fine Art Gallery in Denver (bagging titles like ‘top 25 galleries in the USA’ and ‘Denver's Best Art Gallery’) and Palette Contemporary Art & Craft in Albuquerque, NM.
MY CREATIVE PROCESS
I love working with acrylic paints on hardboard as my canvas because acrylics dry super fast. This lets me layer it up and keep each color popping. Hardboard's tough, which works great for my style of painting with firm spackling knives, plus it's awesome for getting just the right texture. My process kicks off with a rough sketch on the primed board. Then, I add an underpainting to boost the final colors, making the art pop with depth and interest. I make my own unique frames, which really tie the artwork together. These frames are a mix of a boxed, oak-veneer base, sleek metal frame, and four stylish brushed-metal standoffs that make the painting seem to hover just above the backdrop. I finish the wood in deep ebony, letting its natural vibes complement the painting's energy and colors. The frame's minimalist vibe adds a chic, modern touch that's perfect for any room.
